HUMAN GENOME SCIENCES NAMES PERRY KARSEN SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

ROCKVILLE, Maryland – September 4, 2003 – Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: HGSI) today announced the appointment of Perry Karsen to the position of Senior Vice President, Business Development. Mr. Karsen will report directly to William A. Haseltine, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and will also serve as a member of the Operating Committee of the Company. Mr. Karsen will be responsible for working with the Human Genome Sciences leadership team to develop, execute and manage strategic alliances, partnerships and acquisitions.

Mr. Karsen has over twenty years of experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Prior to joining Human Genome Sciences, Mr. Karsen was a General Partner at Pequot Ventures, a venture capital firm in New York City, with responsibility for investments in biotechnology and medical devices. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Karsen held a number of senior marketing and business development posts at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, including responsibility for merger and acquisition activities for the company’s medical device and pharmaceutical businesses. As Vice President, Strategic Business Analysis and Development, Mr. Karsen served on a team to assess Bristol-Myers Squibb’s portfolio of businesses and develop recommendations as to the future composition of the portfolio. At Genentech prior to joining Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mr. Karsen served as Director of Business Development and Representative Director, Japan. Mr. Karsen began his career at Abbott Laboratories as a Product Manager, and he advanced there from 1983-1994 through a succession of marketing and business development management positions of increasing responsibility, including service as Commercial Director, Europe, and Director, Licensing and Acquisitions. Mr. Karsen earned a Master of Management degree from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, an M.A.T. from Duke University in the teaching of biology, and a B.S. from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in biological sciences.
